Senator Barack Obama is searching for a vice presidential running mate in his pursuit of the White House. Now, a big power player in the Democratic Party says District 17's congressional rep should be considered.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi told a Newsweek video team at Washington, DC's Newseum that Congressman Chet Edwards deserves a strong look as Obama's running mate for the November election against Senator John McCain.

"I do think in the list of considerations there should be somebody from the House of Representatives,” Pelosi said, “and Chet Edwards is a person many of us think would be a good person to have in the mix."

Watch the video and link to the video blog below this story.

Pelosi also throws out names like Senators Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Jim Webb and others during the brief interview.

In a statement released Tuesday, Edwards said the following:

"It has been a privilege for me to work closely with Speaker Pelosi in behalf of our nation's veterans, and I am humbled that she and others would suggest that the Obama campaign consider me for their VP list. Given that I have not met with the Obama campaign regarding the vice presidential nomination, I would not want to speculate on the names being considered."

While Obama and Clinton were engaged in their battle for the Democratic nomination, Edwards endorsed Obama. The Illinois senator won Brazos, Washington and Walker Counties during the Texas primary.

Clinton won six local counties, and took the state's primary overall. Obama took the Texas caucus.

Edwards will face Rob Curnock, a Republican businessman from Waco, in the race for District 17, which stretches from south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex through much of the Brazos Valley.

Since redistricting created District 17 as it's drawn today, Edwards has won election twice. The Aggie Democrat has served in Congress since winning election in 1990.

The last time a sitting member of the House of Representatives was chosen as a major party vice presidential nominee, it was the first female on a presidential ticket. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York was Former Vice President Walter Mondale's choice when Mondale ran for the White House. They were soundly defeated by the Reagan-Bush ticket in 1984.

Another New York representative, William Miller, was Republican Barry Goldwater's choice for vice president in the 1964 election. Again, it was a easy win for their opponents. Lyndon Johnson won the presidency again.

You have to go back to the 1932 and 1936 elections to find a member of the House on a winning presidential ticket. Texas representative and Speaker of the House John Nance Garner won with President Franklin Roosevelt twice, and was vice president for just shy of eight years.

I received a mailing from C. Edwards at tax payer expense promoting to open the Strategic Reserve. The worst congress in many years would be better served by someone that does not follow a no drilling plan than to pull from the reserve. We need to expand all of our efforts to reduce dependance on the middle east and C. Edwards continues to oppose opening up drilling opportunities. Elect someone else to promote the interest of Brazos Valley to reduce energy cost and dependance on countries that are opposed to our freedoms. C. Edwards voting record continues to support a do nothing Democratic ruled Congress. This Congress does not represent the majority of the American people but represents selected elite interests.

THe people in this area are beyond ridiculous and ignorant. I can't wait until Obama wins and you all see how horrible it is not. Get over yourselves, put down your Bible and quit judging everyone and try to think of what is best for our country and not yourselves. There is a much bigger and important world outside of the closed minded voters of the Brazos Valley. I can't wait to get out of here...

I'm with anonymous. I too have contacted Chet's office to express my conservative views and received the same BS letters that anonymous made reference to. Chet's political views are more in line with San Franciso than Texas. The truth of the matter is Pelosi and Barry Husein Obama would never remotely consider a VP that was even a little conservative. They want a full blown, all out liberal. Chet fits the bill.

Well, hell, I never knew this until I read it on MSN.com "Why Don't Jehovah's Witnesses Vote? Because they're representatives of God's heavenly kingdom." Are you kidding me???????????????????????

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 28, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Lisa, I take the time to contact ALL my representatives and have many reply letters to prove it. Well, I've contacted Chet's office by phone and email. I get the same old bull because I'm a conservative. "Chet thanks you for voicing your opinion and will TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION." BULL.

I would take Chet over Barack for president any day. If you just listen to Barack, he speaks very clearly the language of Marxism and Communism and according to recent polls, half of Americans are OK with that. I'm sick of Bush, McCain and most politicians, but electing Obama is scraping the bottom of the barrel. We need leaders, not revolutionary, socialist politicians.

In the 1930's people that mooched of the taxpayers through government programs often named their illegitimate sons Roosevelt in honor of FDR and his socialist new deal program. In 2009 they will be naming their hood rat chilins Pelosi.

If you honestly cannot figure out what Chet HAS DONE for the 17th District, take a look at this: http://www.edwards.house.gov/html/content.cfm?id=647. These are the projects he has worked on just in 2008. You cannot tell me that he is not representing this district. Chet has worked endlessly to make sure that every voice is heard. He is truly the people’s representative. If you feel like these projects don’t affect you, think again. The ag research going on at TAMU affects each and every one of us everyday. The work and research going on at NERRTC will save lives, possibly yours, in the case of national disasters, etc. The Brazos Valley has received funds to help improve transportation and roads, improve medical centers, update police technology, and more. These things affect your life everyday. I won’t even mention the endless support veterans have received. If you don’t feel like you’re voice has been heard, it’s because you’re wasting time putting your opinion up here rather than actually contacting him. Call his local office. The staff is there to listen and help. I know personally. The fact is that Chet Edwards DOES represent and support this district. The problem most of you have is that he is a Democrat representing this district in an outstanding way!

Our country will go to hell in a hand basket if - no IF - Obama gets elected...I'm so sick of hearing his name, Pelosi's name and the Clinton's names...Hey I know, how 'bout if Obama chooses Hellory, I mean Hillory, as his running mate, then Bill can get back into the White House to find him a new intern...UGHHHHHH!They all disgust me!

Posted by: EJ Location: Bryan on Jun 26, 2008 at 09:30 PM
I never listened to what Pelosi said before; why start now?

Kendra: I can't deny that Cheat, I mean Chet, has done a lot for vets. McCain has too. If you look at almost any candidate hard enough you can find at least one strong point. Despite the fact that I would never vote for a liberal, I have to admit that Barack Husein Obama dresses nicer than any of the other candidates. Bill Clinton plays the saxophone very well. Bush treats his secret service officers very well. McCain served his country honorably in Vietnam. None of this candidates are conservative enough for me.

Posted by: Get Rid of Chet Location: Now on Jun 26, 2008 at 02:36 PM
Right on, VW, RP and Cynthia! At least SOME people aren't blinded by his crooked smile. Everyone is claiming he does alot of good for vets. What ELSE has he done?

Posted by: Kendra Location: CS on Jun 26, 2008 at 12:53 PM
I'm not a huge Chet fan, but I feel as though these negative comments are a bit unwarranted. The guy is a solid vote for the veterans and has always come to their aid in our area when they needed it. Obama could do far worse. Go Chet!

Posted by: paul Location: b/cs on Jun 26, 2008 at 09:03 AM
I hope the Aggies are proud of this one...How many put this guy in office!!!

Posted by: Get Rid of Chet Location: Now! on Jun 26, 2008 at 08:16 AM
Ultra Conservative, you are absolutely right! McCain does not stand for what I'm looking for in a president, either. However, the alternative is even scarier. This is a sad world and it's getting sadder.

Great. A New-and-Improved McGovern and a guy with all the personality of a shady used car salesman in the Oval Office. If they make it, we'll deserve everything that happens to us. Not that the jack - er - donkey in elephant's clothing is much improvement...

Posted by: Cynthia Location: Bryan on Jun 26, 2008 at 07:49 AM
Ever hear of the saying, "Screw up, Move up" guess ole Chet fits that bill! For those of you who support him please name me one thing HE has done for this area? IF you can that is. I love people that say someone does something, but then can't name one thing! I will tell you this though, Bush has kept terrorist attacks off U.S.A. soil for 7 years! I'd much rather fight on thier soil than ours. How would you like it if you woke up every day wondering if an IED or suicide bomber was going to land in your front door? Think about it folks, it's either there or here...I vote for there!

Posted by: W lover Location: TEXAS on Jun 26, 2008 at 07:30 AM
Chet Edwards does not "represent" this district, even though that is what he was elected over and over to do. And Debbie, if you are so blind to not see that the war on terror is justified, then there is nothing I can say to you. The war is not about oil...if so WHERE IS IT?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 26, 2008 at 07:25 AM
OMG! Obama is scary ENOUGH!!! NOW THIS! PEOPLE GET YOUR HEAD OUT!!!!

Posted by: RP Location: Texas on Jun 26, 2008 at 07:05 AM
This goes to show where Chet's loyalty is. If you support gay marriage, amnesty for illegal aliens, capitol gains taxes, government health care and increasing spending for welfare and food stamps than Chet is your man.

Posted by: concerned Location: bryan on Jun 25, 2008 at 10:21 PM
How scary that Chet Edwards has Pelosi's support! I think that says alot about how crooked he really is.

Posted by: Ultra Conservative Right Winger Location: In Limbo on Jun 25, 2008 at 06:59 PM
A right wing conservative, like me, is left without much of an option in this election. Obama is a no for obvious reasons. Although I admire McCain's military service he is way too liberal for me. Some examples of McCain's actions I don't agree with are the McCain Fiengold Act - Restricted free speech. It prohibits ads that criticize an incumbent within 30 days of a federal election. Many call this the incumbent protection act. McCain Liberman Act- would have raised the federal gas tax. McCain Kennedy Act- would have granted amnesty for illegal aliens. He also has a "C" rating from the NRA. It is my opinion that the Republican party has largely abandoned it's conservative base. I do realise that many people do not share my conservative beliefs. That is fine, as it is their right as an American to support and vote for the candidate of their choice. Like it or not Barack Husein Obama is probably going to be your next president. I'm going to be in for a long 4-8 years. :)

I THINK EDWARDS WOULD BE THE PERFECT RUNNING MATE!!

Posted by: Get Rid of Chet! on Jun 25, 2008 at 05:27 PM
Well, I'm sorry, but I'm NOT A VET! I voted and have every right to criticize this man. You say he has alot of "pull", I say he is full of "bull".

Posted by: DJ Location: College Station on Jun 25, 2008 at 02:43 PM
Debbie, unfortunately McCain is NOT a junior Bush. He is a democrat in an elephant outfit. One more thing, it is Bush's war, not Bushes war, and he dilikes war as much as any of us. This is a necessary evil.

Posted by: George Location: Bryan on Jun 25, 2008 at 11:36 AM
We should be honored to have our representative be considered for VP. Can all the conservatives in this area put their ignorance aside for one minute and see that Chet has done more for this community than any other rep. Sure, lets put a republican in office just for the sake he has a elephant by his name tag and would most certainley be the lap dog that you talk about for all the lobbyist that fund their campaign to unseat Chet. This new rep would be in the basement in the capital office building and would not have a smidgen of the pull that Chet has. Chet works hard for our vets, and we should be proud to have a rep. who cares so much.

Posted by: Howard Location: Bryan on Jun 25, 2008 at 11:14 AM
I will not vote for Obama. He did not wear a flag on his lapel until he needed votes, did not hold his hand over his heart during the national anthem, until he needed votes. Did not quit the bigoted Chicago church until he needed votes, rejected it's preacher who he said was a life long mentor, when he needed votes. He is a great orator but lacks substance.

Posted by: Blue Location: Grimes County on Jun 25, 2008 at 10:50 AM
It's easy to tell from the comments what political parties the writers are. Chet Edwards has done more for this district than anyone in the last few decades. His stance for Veterans and Veterans healthcare show the kind of man he is. I would happily vote for a ticket with his name on it. I would certainly hate to lose him as our Rep., but would proudly support him as VP.

Posted by: citizen on Jun 25, 2008 at 10:50 AM
anther reason not to vote for obamee

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 25, 2008 at 08:21 AM
Typical. I haven't approved of Chet for years and now he may buddy up with (shudder) Obama. What a perfect couple. God help us all.

Posted by: lp Location: college station on Jun 24, 2008 at 10:49 PM
What a blessing that would be! Anything to get rid of Chet. I'm so tired of him winning this district every election, yet not representing what this district really needs. He would fit right in with that socialist Obama.

Posted by: James E Location: Bryan on Jun 24, 2008 at 09:17 PM
I'm all for it if it means ridding this district of "Chet". He's a total fraud. "Conservative" lip service while voting with Pelosi EVERY TIME! No wonder she likes him so much.

Posted by: Debbie Location: somerville on Jun 24, 2008 at 07:23 PM
This is the man who should have ran for the Democratic ticket in the first place. He would have won by a land slide. I personally know most military folks are tired of "Bushes war" and plan to vote for Obama. If you have not seen the show "Bushes War" you need to do research and watch it. You just might be shocked as a republician of the lies that were told and the I CANT REMEMBER THAT MEETING. McCain is just a Jr Bush and we DO NOT need any more deaths or WARS. We as Americans should stand up and say so. Oh yea and stop blaming the Demorcrats for the gas, while Bush, his father and many of his friends are padding their pockets of us with the gas prices.

Posted by: Registered Voter Location: Red District in a Red State on Jun 24, 2008 at 06:54 PM
Old Chet fits right in with his liberal buddies Barack Husein Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. It is not a bad idea for him to accept the VP slot if it is offered. He has certainly burned every bridge in his home district. If he wants to continue a career in politics the VP slot is his best option. He is certainly finished in this red district.
