It will take a runoff to determine one of the seats on the College Station city council, and early voting for that runoff begins Monday.

On May 9, incumbent Lynn McIlhaney earned 49 percent of the vote, but according to the city charter, a majority of the total votes is needed to win the seat.

Challenger Katy-Marie Lyles scored 43 percent when the votes were tallied, and now faces McIlhaney for Place 4 on the council.

A second challenger, Doug Cummings, earned eight percent of votes cast. Only the first runner-up goes on to the runoff.

Early voting for the runoff begins Monday. Votes can be cast at City Hall or the College Station ISD administration building. The early voting period ends June 9, with Election Day taking place June 13. A full list of times and voting locations is listed below.

McIlhaney is the former mayor of College Station, and is seeking her second consecutive term on the council, telling voters her experience is an asset to the council. She has spent the better part of the last quarter century in an elected role for the city.

Lyles, a political newcomer, said she ran to provide a youthful perspective on the issues in the city. She serves as the director of college ministries at A&M United Methodist Church.

Tim, I agree the extension is a bummer, but do you know that Lyles would not have voted for the extension?

Lynn McIlhaney lost my vote when she voted for the 20 year extension on red light cameras. I support the red light cameras however this is an abuse of power. Power must be kept in check and I strongly disagree with her decision and she has lost my vote. I will vote for Lyles. She does not have experience with this city council and you know what ? THAT IS A GOOD THING !!
