Challenger Katy-Marie Lyles has won the runoff for Place 4 on the College Station city council.
The final numbers showed Lyles with 1,806 votes, or 57 percent, and incumbent Lynn McIlhaney with 1,349 votes, or 43 percent.
A runoff was needed following last month's election because no candidate received more than half the total votes.
McIlhaney earned 49 percent of the 3,025 votes cast in May, while Lyles pulled in 43 percent. Doug Cummings earned the remaining votes, but only the top two candidates move on to a runoff.
Lyles had argued that she could provide a new perspective on the council. At just 24-years-old, Lyles is the director of college ministries at A&M United Methodist Church.
McIlhaney had spent the better part of the last quarter century in an elected role in College Station, including a stint as mayor. She had touted her experience as the reason she should be re-elected.
Lyles was able to eclipse her May vote total by more than 500 in the runoff, while McIlhaney lost more than 100 votes.

The people of College Station are funny. They are so wastefull with taxpayer's money and they can't stand having a camera take a picture of them breaking the law. Good luck to you, Ms. Lyles and to Lynn, thanks for all you've done to make CS a better place.

Lynn, if you had not voted for the red light cameras, you would probably still have your seat on council. You will forever serve as a shining example of what happens to council members that ignore their constituents and cater to a small minority.
