•Canvas (any size, I used a 12 X 12)
•ModPodge (I used glossy finish)
•Scrapbook paper (any amount and design, but ideally it should be enough to cover the front of the canvas and wrap around the sides)

What makes a home really beautiful? When you flip through a magazine or watch home television shows, it’s not the size or location of a house that stands out. It’s the interior decoration. And, contrary to what you may think, it doesn’t take an exorbitant amount of money to have a wonderfully decorated home. It only takes some ingenuity and craftiness.
Everyone knows it’s smarter to shop at discount stores in order to save money. But before you go on a shopping spree at Walmart or Target, it might be a good idea to look at a craft supply store.
In many cases, crafting your own decorative pieces is a budget-savvy way to decorate your home or apartment. For example, at Target, a 12 X 12 decorative canvas with four abstract pictures costs $20.00. I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased 4 sheets of scrapbook paper, a 12 X 12 canvas, ModPodge, and a paintbrush for less than $15.00.
Crafting your own decorations for your house or apartment is an investment. When you first start, you’ll have to buy things like ModPodge, paint brushes, or glitter. But once you buy those things, you have them for a long time. If I decided to make another scrapbook paper canvas art, it would only cost $8.00, since I already have ModPodge and a paintbrush. Plus, when you make something yourself, you know nobody else is going to have the same thing. It’s a wonderful unique piece.
Besides being cheap, making your own decorations offers other benefits. For example, if you’re picking out the scrapbook paper, paint, or glitter colors for whatever you’re making, you can match it to your existing décor, making your house even more put-together and beautiful. Also, it’s super fun to have craft nights with your roommates, friends, or family.
Most people are probably thinking they don’t have the time or talent to make their own decorations. I’m a college student, so I certainly understand feeling like you’re too busy for craft night. But the Target look-alike canvas I made took me about 15 minutes. Also, I have no artistic talent whatsoever, but this was easy enough for me to make with ease. Not to mention, you can’t really mess up your own art. The imperfections only make it more unique.
Bottom line: decorating on a budget can be tricky. But when you make your own decorations, you save money, you can match your décor, and you end up with a completely unique piece of art.
Now you can do it yourself! Here are the step-by-step instructions to the Abstract Canvas Art!
1.Cut the scrapbook paper to fit your canvas. I had 4 pieces of 12 X 12 scrapbook paper, so I cut them into squares slightly larger than ¼ of the paper (so it could wrap the edges of the canvas).
2. Paint a layer of ModPodge on your canvas. Since I had 4 sections of paper, I painted my canvas ¼ at a time.
3. Lay a piece of scrapbook paper over the area coated with ModPodge. Flatten it out with your hands.
4. Paint a second coat of ModPodge on top of the scrapbook paper.
5. The edges of the canvas are where this project gets tricky. I wasn’t exactly sure how to make it look perfect, so I painted a layer of ModPodge on the edge and then folded my scrapbook paper over like I was wrapping a gift. It kept wanting to pop up, so I propped it up against the floor until it stuck.
6. Paint a layer of ModPodge on top of the scrapbook paper that has been wrapped over the side.
7. Let dry (ideally for at least 24 hours)
