In a rough economy, it's no secret we're all trying to stretch a dollar. But, we don't want to sacrifice the way we live or look.

So, many bargain hunters have found a way to get the look for less, including me.

According to The National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops, all of its members surveyed have seen an increase in sales. Plus, many report an 83 percent jump in new customers.

So, after seeing these statistics and hearing some of your stories, I had to find out why people are flocking to resale shops.

If you watched my story Wednesday night on News 3, you know I visited Goodwill and Once Upon a Child in College Station. I found great deals at both places. But, you do have to search for the great deals. At Goodwill I found an entire outfit (dress, shoes and jewelry) for $27.01, that would have cost me around $205 brand new. I looked for brands I was familiar with, so I knew if I was getting a good deal or not. At Once Upon a Child, I found a cute little boy's outfit (Polo shirt, Gap khakis and Tommy Hilfiger shoes) for $23, that would retail for $77.94 brand new.

I have also gone to other resale shops to browse and sell. I, like many women, have those moments where I like nothing in my closet. So, my rule of thumb is, if I haven't worn it in a year, I either donate it or try to sell it. I have sold some of my items at resale shops in town. Plato's Closet has bought a few items, but it really looks for the 21 and under styles. I have even sold a few items at Resale and More, which is on Texas Avenue near Southwest Parkway. However, I heard today many of these stores are taking fewer items. So many more people are trying to sell to make an extra buck.

Now, many of you may say I could find something brand new and on sale for less than I could find at a resale store. That sometimes is true. I have found some great pieces on the clearance rack. But, again, it just takes time. I never leave a store without looking at the sale or clearance rack (most of the times I start there) because you never know what you are going to find.

Don't you love saying, "I got this great shirt for $5." It's fun. I'm always like, "Shane, how much do you think I got this for?" He now guesses lower than he used too, which kind of takes the fun out of it :)

I'd like to hear your bargain shopping stories. Do you shop resale? Do you sell your items at resale shops? What stores are your favorite?

Also, if you have a Saving You Money idea send it my way.

Happy Saving,

Meredith

You will save a ton of money if you don't mistake wants for needs. Needs are pretty simple to identify--those items that are necessary to sustain: Shelter, food, clothing, transportation. Wants are those things that enhance or possibly improve our family life. A car is a need. Unless necessary for your business, a $40,000 Sport Utility Vehicle is a want, even if a lot of people don't see it that way. Have you ever heard (or said) "I absolutely need...?" when the actual meaning was "I really want?" This is not to suggest that you shouldn't be able to have the things you want--only that to delude yourself into believing that a want is a need--and busting your budget in the process--is a recipe for financial disaster. As a former Goodwill employee, I will say only about 10% of the good stuff that is donated actually makes it out to the floor. Moreover, by the time the color wheel sets things cheap, it's been picked through countless times. Our store had regulars that came in every day to see what was new. And finally, the prices are just some guy in the back (that was my job) making up prices for what it seems to be worth. Anything that costs more than $5 is overpriced, outside of clothing, and can often be found cheaper in retail stores. PLR Ebooks

Kill your debt first. Simply calculating how much you spend each month on your debts will illustrate that eliminating debt is the fastest way to free up money. Once the money is freed from debt payment, it can easily be re-purposed to savings. Plus, the sooner you pay off debt, the less interest you'll pay, and that money can be saved instead. PLR Articles

Big 12 Break Up? Dejavu All Over Again? Reminds Me of The SWC - 1 Comments Posted
For the last few days I've heard lots of moaning about the coming break up of the Big 12. To those resisting change I've been using all those phrases that deal with change like: "All good things must come to an end." "Change is inevitable." " We must embrace change". (Read Blog)
Defining Moments For Us All - 1 Comments Posted
