In a rough economy, it's no secret we're all trying to stretch a dollar. But, we don't want to sacrifice the way we live or look. So, many bargain hunters have found a way to get the look for less, including me. According to The National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops, all of its members surveyed have seen an increase in sales. Plus, many report an 83 percent jump in new customers. So, after seeing these statistics and hearing some of your stories, I had to find out why people are flocking to resale shops. If you watched my story Wednesday night on News 3, you know I visited Goodwill and Once Upon a Child in College Station. I found great deals at both places. But, you do have to search for the great deals. At Goodwill I found an entire outfit (dress, shoes and jewelry) for $27.01, that would have cost me around $205 brand new. I looked for brands I was familiar with, so I knew if I was getting a good deal or not. At Once Upon a Child, I found a cute little boy's outfit (Polo shirt, Gap khakis and Tommy Hilfiger shoes) for $23, that would retail for $77.94 brand new. I have also gone to other resale shops to browse and sell. I, like many women, have those moments where I like nothing in my closet. So, my rule of thumb is, if I haven't worn it in a year, I either donate it or try to sell it. I have sold some of my items at resale shops in town. Plato's Closet has bought a few items, but it really looks for the 21 and under styles. I have even sold a few items at Resale and More, which is on Texas Avenue near Southwest Parkway. However, I heard today many of these stores are taking fewer items. So many more people are trying to sell to make an extra buck. Now, many of you may say I could find something brand new and on sale for less than I could find at a resale store. That sometimes is true. I have found some great pieces on the clearance rack. But, again, it just takes time. I never leave a store without looking at the sale or clearance rack (most of the times I start there) because you never know what you are going to find. Don't you love saying, "I got this great shirt for $5." It's fun. I'm always like, "Shane, how much do you think I got this for?" He now guesses lower than he used too, which kind of takes the fun out of it :) I'd like to hear your bargain shopping stories. Do you shop resale? Do you sell your items at resale shops? What stores are your favorite? Also, if you have a Saving You Money idea send it my way. Happy Saving, Meredith |

| It’s been a month since I have written about my upcoming AC/DC concert with my 14 year old son Geoffrey. I had a real hard time getting tickets for the sold out event. Three different times in the final 12 hours my “deals” fell through. My alternative was to hit the concert and the ticket scalpers at the last minute. (Read Blog) |
