The 80s: Can't Remember 'em, Won't Forget 'em

My remembrances of the 1980s involve Sesame Street, GI Joes, my dog Duke, and Bon Jovi.  I often sang "Livin' on a Prayer" from the top of my backyard slide in Oklahoma.  I wish I knew what Duke thought of all that.

The B/CS Chamber of Commerce apparently hated my reporting from Washington, DC so much that they wanted me to be a part of Ladies Night in a few days.  I'll be performing at the Hilton on the night of all things 1980s along with Jon Boaz and KBTX.com's resident B/CS reviewer, Jordan Meserole, who was also in Washington with me in May.  He, too, must have done horrible work.  Nobody asked The Analog Kid to perform.

In all seriousness, I'm told it's a lovely evening despite the eventual embarrassment I will be subjected to that night.  I'll keep what I'll be performing a secret, but I need help getting whipped into shape for the night the 80s return.  I won't be wearing my performance garb all night, and my first idea for a costume change was going to be to wear footie pajamas, a bonnet, a bib and a pacifier.

Barbara, who (says she) didn't dislike the idea, decided on another.  After a shopping trip together Wednesday afternoon, I believe she and I have got all the elements for a leather clad, mulleted rocker, much like the members of the band I would go see at the Bluebird club in my college days.  I'm willing to bet we'll discuss this on Brazos Valley This Morning in the days leading up to Ladies Night.

My questions to you are: what was your apparel of choice in the 80s, and what, if any, suggestions do you have for me?  There's still time if you've got a fantastic idea...leave your comments above, but PLEASE keep it affordable.

Ok - so the Pee Wee thing is out due to the deep studly voice. One 80's thing we did was wear a Polo shirt with the color popped and then wore an oxford button down shirt over it. Jeans and loafers complete the outfit. I'll see if I can dig up a picture some place. Also...how do you feel about wearing one white glove? or red leather pants ala Loverboy? (just checking;))

Haha. Steve, you are unbelieveable. Spandex all the way.

First Cliff, I had to Google "Howard the Duck." Second, that is poor idea. The bill for that costume would be tremendous...as would the amount of money I'd have to pay for it. I'll be here all night...tip your waitress.

80's Outfit, huh? I'm thinking Howard the Duck would be about right.

I could supply more pictures of Steve in his '80's attire. Will there be video of this event?

Skinny tie, preferably with piano keys, light colored jacket with sleeves rolled up, stone-washed tight jeans, shoes-vans or penny loafers sans socks. Oh and Ray-Ban aviator shades with neck cord.

I believe it's all the '80s, Duckie, which probably encompasses a number of fashion trends. I'll likely be going with the hair band rocker look, but again, I'm up for suggestions...that don't involve spandex, Barbara!!!!

I looked at the link for ladies night and it has 2008 x'ed out with 1980 written in. So is this a 1980 theme or 1980's theme. Very different. 1980 is a bit of a '70's hangover, fashion-wise. Bright colors and prachute pants weren't in until '84. The mid 80's saw the increase in hair gel/mousse while 1980 hair was longer with no controlling substances, save Aqua Net. so what is it, Fully? 1980 or the '80's?

I still say Spandex should be involved somehow.

Well... as a graduate of the class of '86, I definitely remember the 80s. Being a singer/dancer in high school and college, I usually opted for the Flashdance look. Ya know... a sweatshirt cut raggedly at the neck to fall off the shoulders, torn tights and the infamous leg warmers. I'd "Madonna it up" from time to time with big cross earrings and a dozen or so bracelets on each arm. Then there was the eyeliner and the bangs teased way up with spiral perm everywhere else. So what do you think? That could be a really great look for you, Steve! ;-)

Posted by: TLIAC You know after reading your blog, if I can find a fun table to sit at, I'll actually fork over the cash to see this. As far as your question, In the 80's I remember wearing really, really tight jeans. They probably would not fit over my knees now.
