Have you ever wondered if your TV weatherman is pronouncing the name of a tropical storm correctly?

I'll be honest -- every year I cringe when I see some of the names I know I'll slip on at least once. There have been a few names I've tried to avoid altogether, using phrases like "...the powerful category 3 storm in the gulf", or "...we continue to watch the fifth-named storm of the year". The power of words (smile).

However, the National Hurricane Center is nice enough to provide a pronunciation guide! The names this year all seem to be pretty straightforward.

Ana
Bill
Claudette (claw-DET)
Danny
Erika (ERR-ree-ka)
Fred
Grace
Henri (ahn-REE)
Ida
Joaquin
Kate
Larry
Mindy
Nicholas (NIK-o-las)
Odette (o-DET)
Peter
Rose
Sam
Teresa (te-REE-sa)
Victor (VIC-ter)
Wanda

Because everyone knows how to correctly pronounce Joaquin...

Posted by: anon yeah... Henri is actually the French version of Henry. And that's how you pronounce it in French, ahn-ree.

There are lots of "normal" names on the list: Bill, Kate, Larry, etc. But there are only so many names out there, and I think that once a name is used that's it. But I do agree that providing a guide to pronounce Erika (after people have watched All My Children for decades) seems a little dumb.

Ahn-ree is the way they say it in France and they can make anything sound weak.

if they need a pronunciation guide to help with sounding out Erika, Nicholas, Odette, Teresa,Claudette, or Victor - They should not even have recieved their degree! The only name up there that is pronounced incorrectly is the one spelled Henri. Henri is pronounced (Hen-ree) - You want the pronunciation "ahn-ree" then spell it onry or onri. Better yet, don't do stupid spellings and pronunciations to perfectly good names! The ONLY name up there that MIGHT need clarification is Joaquin, and they did not EVEN do that one! (hwa-kin) This might just be the most asinine report i've ever read. NEXT!

I think that it is a sad day when we need a guide to help us pronunciate the names of future storms.

Post Concert: Thoughts From A Middle Aged Father/Rocker - 1 Comments Posted
It’s been a month since I have written about my upcoming AC/DC concert with my 14 year old son Geoffrey. I had a real hard time getting tickets for the sold out event. Three different times in the final 12 hours my “deals” fell through. My alternative was to hit the concert and the ticket scalpers at the last minute. (Read Blog)
