Doug Brown -- Retired after 50 Years!

With quite a few weather events taking shape over the Brazos Valley in the past few weeks, I almost forgot to pay tribute to one of televisions' greatest!

Longtime weatherman Doug Brown retired from KTRK-TV (ABC 13) in Houston after 50 years of weather broadcasting! That's a long time. His last broadcast for the ABC owned-and-operated station in Houston was Thursday morning, February 28th.

If you were wondering, Brown did in-fact retire from the same station that former KBTX meteorologist Travis Herzog begin broadcasting with in 2006. I got the opportunity to meet Doug Brown in May 2007 at the 50th Anniversary reunion party for KBTX Media! He was a former weather anchor for our sister station, KWTX-TV, in Waco. He and his wife were among the nicest people I've ever met.

Brown isn't the only longtime weather anchor to leave the broadcasting business in recent history. His former colleague, former chief weather anchor Ed Brandon, also retired from ABC 13 after may years with the station. After over 30 years of broadcasting, former chief weather anchor Troy Dungan also retired in 2007 from Dallas-based WFAA-TV. Dungan was another television legend that once worked at KBTX-TV many years ago. After spending more than 20 years at KHOU-TV, the CBS affiliate in Houston, Dr. Neil Frank also announced the he was hanging up his hat in weather broadcasting. Dr. Frank (Doc) is also the former director of the National Hurricane Center.

Here's to Doug Brown and all the other longtime weather broadcasters to years of outstanding service and a fabulous new page in their lives.

Growing up as a child in the Brazos Valley we always watched the noon show with Doug Brown & Johnny Watkins. It was words to live by. Though the days are long gone, I will always have fond memories. Thanks for those great years of service.

When we were kids, we watch "Channel 3" and Doug Brown with the weather. My Daddy had a lot of respect for Doug. I recall a story Daddy use to tell about Doug and one of his forecasts. Daddy said that the weatherman on "channel 6" said it was not going to snow. However, Doug said it was going to snow. It snowed! From that day forward, in Daddy's opinion, Doug was number 1!

My family was crazy about Doug and Johnny Watkins, too. Johnny talked about, interviewed, and visited my grandfather quite a bit, when my grandfather was in his 90s. My aunt was also interested in Doug as she was a Baylor grad, while the rest of the family claimed A&M, more on Johnny's side. The weather forecast and farm information were so important to business and farming around Calvert. For me, a sound sleeper, nothing would wake me in the mornings-not even an alarm clock. But when I heard Johnny come on in the morning, I was wide awake! We hated when Doug moved to Houston, and I have been so pleased to be able to see him via cable here. Like seeing an old friend. We're going to miss him, but after working so long, he deserves a wonderful retirement. I also remember when Troy was here. He had a little sports car and so did I. On my way to do student teaching at Lamar, I often stopped at the same red light where Troy was. We had to rev our engines, but we didn't race.

While growing up at the KWTX-tv station in Waco I often felt that Mr. Brown was like a 2nd father to me. I was truly saddened to have seen him move to Houston, but am glad Mr. Brown has continued to forecast the weather for so many years. I always appreciated him as he would call me Dave and not Johnny's boy as so many others did. Congratulations Mr. Brown and thank you for so many years of serving our communities.

Many years ago, after Doug Brown left KBTX, we were at my parent's home in Houston on Thanksgiving. My young son was out playing. Were we surprised when he and Doug Brown walked in the front door. Doug had been out jogging and my son recognized him from when he was our weatherman. It was so nice of him to take time out from his busy day to visit with some former fans. I hope he has many happy years in retirement.

My parents and I, like Brenda's grandparents relied on Doug Brown to keep us up to date on the weather. We all ways had a large garden and his word was gospel. The noon news from KWTX was a must. All lunch conversation stopped until after the show was over. Those were much simpler days and the news and weather casters became a part of the family. Johnny Watkins played many 'country boy' tricks on Doug and he took it like a champ. The best to him and his family on his retirement.

My grandparents would fall asleep watching KBTX news, but, when Doug Brown, came on they automatically woke up. They always thought he was THE Weatherman of all time. They were very upset when he left. I can remember watching him with them, and if Doug said it, it was the gospel. Hats of to you Doug.

Ah yes, I have always thought a lot of Doug and hate to see him retire. I'm 51 years old and grew up watching KWTX that was rebroadcast here locally. I have fond memories of Johnny Watkins, Harley Berg, and good ol' Doug Brown. Salute!

I second that opinion of Doug Brown from the reunion...couldn't have been nicer. Pretty cool to think I'm working for the same station that a legend like Doug worked for.
