The Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce is heading to Washington, D.C., on Monday May 7th to present concerns and issues facing small business directly to elected leaders.

Ahead of that trip, the Chamber has developed three main priorities to talk with members of Congress about.

Priority #1:
Promote fiscal responsibility by balancing the budget and reducing debt.

Policies that promote unnecessary spending -- forcing the government to borrow approximately 40 cents of every dollar it spends, while increasing total debt past 100 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) -- are harmful to business.

Priority #2:
Encourage economic development at state and local levels.

The Chamber encourages diligence on the part of lawmakers to maintain the delicate balance of economic success and quality of life that distinguishes the State of Texas by its more localized decision making processes.

Priority #3:
Reduce the regulatory and tax burdens on business.

Each year, federal agencies issue approximately 4,000 new regulations at an annual cost of nearly $1.1 trillion. This amount is roughly equivalent to all U.S. individual and corporate income taxes paid annually and represents a huge hidden tax on present and future generations of Americans. For small businesses, it costs business owners with fewer than 20 employees approximately $10,585 a year per employee to comply with federal regulations.

The Chamber believes that by taking these concerns and issues directly to elected leaders, they will be better understood and heard.

Chamber delegates leave from College Station Monday morning. Their first stop in the capitol is U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
