In the first few days of 2012, the Brazos Valley has seen some horrific traffic accidents. Deadly head on collisions and accidents that tie traffic up for hours.

Each case is different, and Bryan and College Station police look at a number of factors in each accident, including things like speed.

A lot of the time, somebody's watching and sometimes with a radar gun. Now beginning Monday, with the cooperation of police departments, News 3 will start letting you know where those patrols are set up, and which parts of Bryan-College Station more of the accidents happen and more of the tickets are issued.

"The goal of the traffic unit is to reduce the crashes within the city. That's something that we monitor on a weekly basis," says Sergeant Blaine Krauter with the College Station Police Department.

When Sargeant Krauter and the Traffic Enforcement team at College Station Police Department hit the streets, its a targeted attack.

The locations where they patrol are the places where they see the most violations.

"We'll map those, and from those maps we'll find areas that are higher concentrated that we need to deploy the officers," says Krauter.

It's a smart tactic, according to the officers, but College Station isn't alone. The Bryan Police Department does the same thing.

"We get quarterly accident reports. We try to focus on those areas," says Officer Bobby McFarland with Bryan PD.

"If we get any traffic complaints, somebody speeding in their neighborhood, we'll enforce them throughout the day."

Officers hope to reach as many drivers as they can, either by letting them know where they'll be or the old fashioned way.

"I got a citation," Kisha Lee. She was stopped Thursday morning by a College Station Police Officer.

"Apparently the speed limit is 40 miles per hour and i thought it was 50 miles per hour."

Drivers we talked to after being stopped said they are more aware, but knowing where the cops would be ahead of time would be helpful.

"If it helps prevent tickets, accidents, speeding, we are a college town, there are a lot of young drivers, its a good thing for us to slow down," says Lee.

"We would like individuals to know where we're at," says Sgt. Krauter.

"If that helps reduce crashes within the city, if that makes them slow down, makes them pay attention, then we feel it's good idea to put that information out there so folks will know."

Information that can help you avoid be stopped by a cop and safe on the roads.

Both police departments say they work a certain traffic area until they see an improvement, then move on to the next spot.

Starting Monday, January 16th, News 3 will be working with the Bryan and College Station Police departments to let you know where cops will be patrolling.
