Be Prepared to Stretch Your BBQ Budget This Summer

Summer grilling season is upon us, but before you head to the store to buy those hot dogs and hamburgers, be prepared for some sticker shock.

Beef prices are the highest they've been in more than 50 years.

We spoke with Richard Ruffino, who owns Readfield Meats in Bryan and he says it's a spike like he's never seen before.

In some cases, prices have gone up as much as $1.50 per pound. That's mostly for steaks and bacon.

For ground chuck, you'll be paying about 20 cents more per pound than you did last Summer.

The reason is the drought Texas has seen over the past few years. Farmers didn't have enough grazing land for the cattle, so they had to slaughter them to deplete their herd. It takes several years to build the cattle supply back up.

Ruffino says he expects prices will drop again, but it will just take time.

And if you're hoping to go the seafood route for your BBQ, don't expect to find much relief there either. Shrimp prices have skyrocketed 61% over the past year. That's mostly due to a bacterial infection that wiped out a good chunk of the shrimp population, decreasing the supply.
