Black History Month: Meet Rev. Jacqui King

Reverend Jacqui King knows her life calling is in the ministry. It's something she says God showed her in the 90s when she was doing community outreach in the Bryan-College Station area.

On a Sunday morning, King is living out her passion.

She's been leading the congregation at First United Methodist Church in College Station since 2010. While that might seem like a short amount of time, Pastor King is no stranger to the Brazos Valley.

She was helping the now-former pastor of First Church with community outreach.

"His statement to me was it's time to accept your call," says King. "So that was in the 90s, and here we are in 2012 and I'm serving in the space and place where I discerned my call."

King knows her calling and it's helping her spread a message of service and reflection. King preaches that a community shares a connection.

This month, a display in the church proves a powerful point.

"History is crucial," stresses King. "Every item there has something to say about who we are as people, but also the history of families. That, here it is, an African-american family and these are things that they have set aside and collected over time so they can tell their story and their story is our story."

"It's the love of Christ and the move of the holy spirit, but also the passion of people just saying that's part of who I am and I didn't know that story," says King.

"Then when the story is told we see where we all connect throughout life. That's part of the church, that's part of the community that's part of life."

King's love of Christ, and drive to serve, keeps her involved in the community. A community that helped her find her life's calling and one that continues to surprise her.
