Reverend Sam Hill is a quiet man, except when he's leading the congregation at North Bryan New Birth Baptist Church. Pastor Hill's been serving the greater Bryan-College Station community for almost 30 years.
Sundays at North Bryan New Birth Baptist Church, you can find Pastor Sam Hill in front of his congregation.
His boisterous voice quickly fills the small sanctuary.
Get him one-on-one, though, and it's a different story.
"I'm one of the most shy people you'll ever meet," shares Hill. It's a contradiction of sorts. His quiet demeanor and his preacher's voice.
"I think that this is me, but I believe that when I'm up that it shouldn't be me. It should be God working through me," explains Hill.
It's God's direction in Pastor Hill's life that leads him outside the walls of his church. The pastor that preaches on Sunday is the same guy that quietly helps residents at local food pantries.
"I know for a fact that in times that aren't as nice as they are now, that sometimes when you're hurting, church is the last place that you come to," says Hill. He knows that it can be difficult for people to bring themselves to the church. That's why he goes to meet them where they are.
"I don't know anyone that's homeless, but once you get here you get to meet the homeless," shares church member David Lamar. "You get to be at the situation and it becomes real"
It's reality that Pastor Hill brings back inside the walls of his church. A reality that time is linear... and all things important to a community have to be told.
"Anything that happens is the past. How one precieves what happens is perspective. But only what's passed on is history," says Hill.
"Whenever we quit telling the story it falls out of the history. It will always be the past, but it won't always be a part of our history. And so because we have a story to tell, we have to continue to tell that story."
It's a story that is continually being written, in hopes that future generations will tell it.
