The younger brother of Sam Houston State University student who went missing in October and who still has not been found, drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming across the Guadalupe River in Comal County.
Will Murray, 21, the brother of T.J. Murray, 24, was pulled out of the river by a friend after Will Murray disappeared in the water and never came back up, around 5 p.m.
Will Murray is one of four sons of Tom and Janelle Murray, who live in the Oak Ridge North area and are both teachers and coaches at Oak Ridge High School, said Hannah McDonald, a family friend.
A cousin of Will Murray’s phoned her in the evening with the news of Will Murray’s drowning, she said.
“He was trying to swim across and just went under,” she said. “nobody really knows what happened.”
McDonald, who came to know the family when she contacted them after T.J. Murray’s disappearance and who has conducted numerous searches for him, said she has started a donation page for the family at www.gofundme/williammurray.com.
T.J. Murray, a Sam Houston State University student, had been out drinking with friends at several bars on Sawdust Road in South Montgomery County the night of Oct. 19. T.J. Murray told his father he would not drive after drinking, and his truck was found the next day still parked in the parking lot of one of the bars he visited.
His cell phone was found in a nearby ditch.
Tom Murray doubled the reward money for information on T.J. to $20,000 in February.
There is no recent news about T.J., McDonald said Tuesday.
Comal County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical personnel worked to resuscitate Will Murray after his friend pulled him out of the river, but he was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. at Christus New Braunfels Hospital, local media are reporting.
A Comal County justice of the peace has ordered an autopsy.
