11 wins -- no losses.

That's the record for Sam Houston State University's football team. Their undefeated season has led them to being the number one ranked team in The Sports Network/ FCS Top 25.

Saturday in San Marcos, the Kats clenched another win, this time from the Bobcats of Texas State.

With the Southland Conference championship secured, the win only added to a polished undefeated record. The Bobcats did put up a fight against Sam Houston. At some points the Kats lead was down to three points, but they rallied in the 3rd and 4th quarters to pull of an impressive finish to the regular season beating the Bobcats 36 - 14.

Head Football Coach Willie Fritz joined Brazos Valley This Morning over the phone Monday morning to talk about the great success his team is having heading into post-season play.

"We're really happy we got the first seed in the FCS Playoffs," said Fritz. He said they're using the bye week to recuperate and heal some injuries.

"This gives us time to get healed up."

He'll also take some time and work on things the team hasn't had time to during the season.

"You know, the hands team on your kick-off return unit, maybe implement a few new plays offensively, a few new coverages and blitzes on defense," explains Fritz.

"We're gonna work on those things, get back to basics a bit, but also work with our younger guys who don't get to play as much."

Coach Fritz took the job at Sam Houston in 2009. He says he's always been optimistic about success for the Bearkats.

"We've got a good combination of very good coaches, excellent players and really good chemistry throughout out the program," explains Fritz.

But speaking about the relative speed of success the team is happening, Fritz said it "happened a little quicker than expected."

Fritz and the Kats have done a good job of focusing on the task at hand each week. He says the goal for the team this season has been to prove it each week and have the goal of being 1-0 at the end of that week.

"The guys have been really good about having that single-mindedness you need to have in order to be successful," says Fritz.

The Bearkats will play the winner of the Stoney Brook/Albany match-up on December 3rd. Coach Fritz is hoping the home field advantage and Texas weather will play a role in helping the Kats put another check in the win column.

"I know I watched one of their games [Sunday] and they played in a driving snow storm, so this weather might be a little different for them," says Fritz.

Sam Houston State University will play either Stoney Brook or Albany on December 3rd. Kick time has yet to be determined. The game will be televised on ESPN 3.
