A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day tradition continues this year.
The 16th Annual Martin Luther King Freedom March stepped off from Sadie Thomas Park in Bryan Monday morning.
With a quick version of "This Little Light of Mine" and a prayer, community members hit the street.
Like they have for the past 16 years, residents in Bryan and College Station come out to honor Dr. King's memory and service by one of his most recognizable acts; marching.
"Dr. King's service, honestly it's one of the most motivating factors in my daily life," shares Alana Frailey. She's a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Texas A&M.
"Its one of the reasons I wanted to join my sorority, I want to serve my community. I think that his courage and his strength as a leader is so inspiring and I can only aspire to be half the individual that he was."
Resdients along Martin Luther King Street in Bryan looked on as the march passed by. The crowd included 6-year-old Reagan Hines.
"He didn't get to go in the same schools as the white children," says Hines. She's been reading about Dr. King in a book.
"So, when he was older, he told the whole world that everyone was an equal."
"I think that we kind of assume, that because we lived during Dr. King's time that, everybody's aware of that message and obviously looking around the world and country today that it's not," says Bobby Slovack.
Community members carry Dr. King's message frm this day forward into the coming year.
The march stopped once at the Brazos Valley African American Museum before finishing at Kemp Elementary School for a program about Dr. King.
