Congressman Bill Flores appeared on Brazos Valley This Morning Wednesday, by phone, to talk about May's job numbers report and several bills that have been passed in the House of Representatives.
Flores said he and his colleagues have passed about 30 bills out of the House that could have a dramatic impact on the private sector economy and provide job opportunities, as well as provide confidence to employers. Those bills haven't moved in the Senate.
Flores successfully added two similar amendments to two different bills that were approved by the House. The amendments, added to the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2013 and the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Act, 2013, prevents funds from being made available to enforce Section 526 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Section 526 prevents federal agencies from securing fuel from non-conventional sources such as coal-to-liquids, oil shale, and oil sands.
When asked why he added the same amendment to the two bills, Flores explained that Section 526 military and fed gov cannot buy fuels if they think those fuels may produce higher carbon emissions than does a traditional fuel from petroleum sources. Flores says his amendment takes the restrictions off the government and military to buy fuels where ever it suits their needs.
"The restrictions make no sense. What the military is doing is buying jet fuel based on vegetable oil for $27 a gallon when they could be buying it at $3 a gallon which would be the typical cost," said Flores.
