Flores: Disappointed in Healthcare Ruling

Posted: Fri 8:25 AM, Jun 29, 2012

Congressman Bill Flores says he was disappointed in the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act.

Speaking on Brazos Valley This Morning Friday, Flores said it was a sad day for America because "big government won and American freedoms and individual liberties lost."

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the critical piece of President Obama's Affordable Care Act, the individual mandate. The decision was 5 - 4, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the liberal justices and writing the majority opinion. The court ruled that the federal government does have the power to require all Americans to acquire insurance if the "fine" imposed on those who don't is considered a tax.

Flores says he doesn't expect there to be any dramatic changes to healthcare in the next few months, but by the year 2014, healthcare could be operated in a new manner.

He says the House is holding a vote on July 11th to repeal the Obamacare plan entirely. Flores hopes his colleagues in Congress can come together on that vote, but he knows a full repeal won't happen.

The Congressman also talked about the Contempt of Congress vote that was passed against Attorney General Eric Holder. Flores said that Holder "brought the vote on himself." He also added that no one in Congress likes to hold anyone in contempt.

"Between Supreme Court decision and Holder contempt vote," shared Flores, "the mood is somber, but we are resolute to do the right things for the American people."
