A Navasota veterinarian is getting some national recognition for his work with large animals thanks to a YouTube series called "Veterinarians on Call."

Dr. Don Goodman is featured in two episodes where he works on large animals like steers. For Goodman, this exposure is helping him share what he thinks is a growing problem in the animal care business.

Goodman has to read minds. His patients at Beard-Navasota Veterinary Hospital can't tell him what's wrong.

For over 30 years, Dr. Goodman has been caring for animals.

Big Animals.

Working with large animals isn't new to Goodman. He grew up in agriculture.

"I was cowboyd," shares Goodman,"worked at sale barn, did that kind of thing, but I just wasn't a very good cowboy. Never was a very good cowboy."

After getting his degree from Texas A&M in 1979, he went to work.

Dr. Goodman do what few vets do anymore; work with food and livestock animals. These animals might live in a herd, but he has to treat them on an individual basis.

Dr. Goodman's appearance in the series "Veterinarians on Call" has him hoping more students, and vets, will get interested in large animal care.

"It's almost like it's a lost profession," says Goodman.

While this profession requires working with some very large animals, sometimes you have to focus on the very, very small.

Dr. Goodman treats animals as big as Rodeo Bulls, but has the flexibility to examine the smallest specimen. When we were visiting, he was checking the fertility of a bull brought in by a rancher.

"The people need to continue to apply and they need to continue to pursue it," says Goodman of his profession.

Goodman hopes there are others out there with the same passion for large animals that he has.
