In 1992, Kristi Yamaguchi earned an Olympic gold medal in figure skating for herself and the United States. That year, she became a national icon, but even two decades on, she still finds herself in the spotlight...and working to stay healthy.

The author, Dancing with the Stars champion and, likely most importantly, mother of two joined Brazos Valley This Morning Wednesday to talk about how she tries to maintain a healthy lifestyle despite a busy schedule.

One tasks moms can do to benefit their little ones can be helpful.

"Going out and playing with the kids and getting outside with them, running around a little bit," Yamaguchi said. "With an exercise DVD, I like to stay home and work out so I'm close by. Turning that on or turning anything on that gets me active that way."

She also touts the use of probiotics, so-called "good" bacteria that help maintain balance of the organisms that are naturally in a person's intestines. According to WebMD, probiotics are used by people to treat stomach and intestinal issues.

Found in yogurt and other dairy products in addition to being sold separately, Yamaguchi says she uses probiotics products daily.

"With this, you know you're getting the exact same dosage every day, what your body needs," she said. "It's a proactive way to stay on top of your digestive health and keep a balance there and feel good."

According to WebMD, "more study is needed on the safety of probiotics in young children, the elderly, and people who have weak immune systems." However, the site notes most probiotics are already in people's systems.
