FOCUS FESTIVAL II, 2010: SCHUMANN
Feb 13, 2010 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Friends Congregational Church, 2200 Southwood Dr., College Station
FOCUS FESTIVAL II, 2010: SCHUMANN
Open to the public and free
Schumann Preliminary Round is the first event of the Schumann Focus Festival and it will take place on Sat, Feb 13, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Friends Congregational Church, 2200 Southwood Drive, College Station.
The annual Focus Festival is a multifaceted event building bridges between music and arts. Widening our cultural horizons is one of its first goals. The first Focus Festival, 2009, was dedicated to Bach and a great success. Since 2010 is a Robert Schumann bicentenary the second Focus Festival will be centered around this great German composer, his music, and Romanticism in general.
The purpose of the Schumann Forum Preliminary Round is to provide a platform for starting the discussions about Romanticism and Schumann, to give students directions and ideas for exploring these themes, and to inspire them to create their own art, research projects, and literary compositions. Also, we envision that the Preliminary Round atmosphere will encourage students to openly express their views, ask questions, and share ideas.
We look forward to welcome three guest experts at the Schumann Forum Preliminary Round on Feb 13:
- Nan Curtis, a director of A&M Forsyth Galleries, - Lora Deahl, a professor of piano from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, - Terence Hoagwood, a professor of English from A&M University, an expert in Romanticism.
There will be three short presentations made by our guest experts covering such topics as “Romanticism in Art”, “Robert Schumann: Life and Work”, and “The Poetry of Song: Schumann and Romanticism”. We hope that these expert views will help us with exploring Romanticism and will result in enlarging BVMTA members teaching capacities in better explaining music of that era to the students. Also we hope that the general audience will greatly gain from this event since it is open to the public and free.
Presentations will be accompanied by visual images and followed by the Schumann workshop led by Dr. L. Deahl. This workshop will help those students/teachers who will seek an expert advice on how to better prepare Schumann’s music for performing it at the Auditions (March 6). We consider this workshop the first performing opportunity of the Schumann Focus Festival.
Acknowledging that these presentations, discussions, and workshop will interest more mature students and their teachers, we also provide an attraction for the younger kids. Various images of butterflies are Schumann Focus Festival logos and on Feb 13 we’ll have local artists working with young students on coloring/making butterflies which will become a great part of the final Recital of Schumann Focus Festival on March 27.

The Big Event
Mar 27, 2010 all day
throughout the community
The Big Event is the largest, one-day, student-run service project in the nation where students of Texas A&M University come together to say "Thank You" to the residents of Bryan and College Station. For the past 27 years Aggie students have participated in this annual event to show their appreciation to the surrounding community by completing service projects such as yard work, window washing, and painting for community members. Although The Big Event has become the largest one-day, student-run service project in the nation, our message and our mission remains the same – to simply say “Thank You.”
