Password Protect Folders
Reporter: Mike Albin

Protecting your files is important and there are many programs available online which help to protect folders and files. I downloaded and tried a lot them, most are just a like. One of the easiest to use was Password Protect.

From their website click ‘download’ for a free 30 day trial. Save the program to your computer, then run the file to install the software. Once installed click the newly created ‘password protect icon’ on your desktop. Select the task to perform and click next. Use the ‘add’ button to choose folders you’d like to protect. Use the ‘remove’ button if you’ve mistakenly added a folder. Click ‘next’, type in a password and supply a hint if you think you might need it. Click ‘next’ again to lock the folders and ‘exit’ when finished. Clicking on my ‘computers 101’ folder now prompts me for a password. Another quick way to protect any folder is to simply right-click it and select ‘protect this folder’.

Windows XP does have an option to protect folders, althought I’ve found it to be less than effective. Programs like Password Protect are free to try and will cost you around $40 to own. But what is the price of security?
