SOMERVILLE, Tex - (KBTX) We are learning more about the arrest of Somerville High School basketball coach Mike Vela.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office tells News 3 the victim who came forward is a 15-year-old male.

Somerville ISD lists Mike Vela as the head basketball coach and a history teacher at Somerville High School. Vela is a familiar face throughout the community.

Randy Hayden has two granddaughters that live in community and believes in protecting every child, especially in small communities.

"You know the whole town raises the kids and when one child, so when one child is affected the whole town is affected,” said Hayden.

Tuesday, Washington County sheriff's deputies arrested Vela on campus.

Officials said he is being charged with online solicitation of a minor and sexual assault of a child after a 15-year-old male came forward with allegations concerning an inappropriate relationship.

Vela is being held at the Washington County jail on a half million dollar bond.

Officials said they are just beginning an extensive investigation, which Hayden said is necessary.

"My reaction is that you always err on the side of caution, and that our kids - our children should be the utmost priority,” said Hayden.

Many people in town did not feel comfortable speaking about Vela's arrest, since the town is so close knit.

Hayden said even though the community may be small, he hopes that anyone who can help in the investigation will.

"I would think that if there is someone here , and I am sure there are people here that know something, that you know they need to step up to the plate,” said Hayden.

The sheriff's office tells us the investigation is just getting started.

Somerville ISD’s superintendent said they will take action to fire Vela at their next school board meeting.
