GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - One person has died and two others hospitalized when a helicopter crashed into the waters off Galveston Island while returning from an offshore tanker.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Richard Standifer says one of two passengers aboard the helicopter died when it went down Monday evening in West Bay, more than two miles from Galveston's Jamaica Beach.

Standifer says the second passenger and the pilot were hospitalized.

The Coast Guard previously said it was the pilot who was killed.

The copter, operated by Republic Helicopters of Santa Fe, just northwest of Galveston, was returning to shore from the tanker Eagle Vancouver. The ship at the time was about 50 miles offshore.

Standifer did not know the conditions of the two survivors.

The cause of the wreck is not yet known.
