Health department officials urge families to get school vaccines early

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - Officials with the Brazos County Health Department says now's the time to get immunizations to avoid long lines in August.

They say many people wait until school is about to begin to get immunizations which causes a back up.

Appointments usually take 10 minutes, but wait times in August can run an hour or longer.

With camps, sports, and other activities - they say the sooner you come in the better.

"The waits here at the health department are long and sometimes here at the health department in August it's difficult because most medical providers want to do a full physical before they give the immunizations. So sometimes you're not going to get an appointment. So please avoid the longs lines at both your doctors office and here at the health department," said Julie Anderson, Community Health Services Director.

Health officials said they will soon be adding new hours for immunization clinics for summer.
