BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - The following news release comes from the Bryan Police Department:
On March 11, 2018 at 12:18 a.m., officers responded to the 2900 block of East State Highway 21 for a reported hit and run collision. A silver Nissan 4 door and a white Chevrolet SUV were both travelling east on SH21.
The Chevrolet struck the Nissan from behind and fled the scene. Responding officers were able to locate the Chevrolet and the driver with information provided by witnesses.
Mayte Gaitan, a 23-year-old Bryan resident was the driver of the Nissan. She was transported to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital and pronounced deceased.
Juan Hernandez, a 25-year-old Bryan resident was determined to be the driver of the Chevrolet. He was transported to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital for evaluation, but was not injured.
During the investigation, officers determined Juan Hernandez was intoxicated and had fled the scene of a collision. He was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Fail to Stop and Render Aid.
Intoxication Manslaughter is a 2nd degree felony. Texas Penal Code Sec. 49.08.
Fail to Stop and Render Aid resulting in death is a 2nd degree felony. Texas Transportation Code 550.021
