COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - Giving back and helping others doesn't take just kindness, it takes time. With our busy lives, that's a hard commodity to come by.
Now, Peace Lutheran Church in College Station has found a creative way to help feed people without working around the clock.
"We're all always willing to give,” said longtime Peach Lutheran member Laura Bay-Williams “Money's the easy thing, food's the easy thing. Time is the hard thing."
Bay-Williams works full time as a veterinarian, but she spends her Sundays at church. That's where she's noticed something about the neighborhood.
"The area surrounding us, sometimes those families, it's a little struggle between the next paycheck," Bay-Williams said.
Her solution? The 'Blessing Box.' Church and community members keep it stocked with food, on their own schedule, and anyone who needs a bite can take one.
"We have a playground just down the street. Lots of neighborhood children come and go,” said Bay-Williams. “If there is a child passing by that's hungry, there are granola bars in there."
It didn’t take long for the rest of the church and surrounding neighborhood to get on board.
"When Laura first explained it to me, she didn't explain it to me, she just said, 'We're doing this!'" Peace Lutheran Pastor Jim Abbott laughed. He's watched as the food has turned over, again and again.
"It's small-scale,” Abbott said. “We're not going to fix the world, but we are going to help our neighbors."
"It's not designed to meet your food needs for a week,” said Bay Williams. “It's designed to meet, ‘Oh gosh, I didn't have breakfast for the kids this morning because I didn't even have time to go to the store.’ Come pick up a packet of oatmeal.”
A box that blesses those giving and receiving.
“The saying on the box is ‘Take what you need. Leave what you can. Above all be blessed,’” said Bay-Williams. “And I think that that really sums it up nicely."
Bay-Williams and Pastor Abbott say they would love to see more ‘blessing boxes’ crop up around town, whether at religious centers or community centers. In fact, they’ve shared the plans used to build the box. You can find them in the Related Documents.
