COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - When you see Ronnie Helm in the halls of College View High School, he is bound to have a smile on his face.
"He is probably the most caring soul and the sweetest man. Just every student that meets him looks up to him," said Dean of Students, Laurie Rath.
Helm has been with the district for more than 20 years, starting as a teacher and coach then moving into an assistant principal position. What many don't know is that Helm has diabetes has been on dialysis since 2012 after he had a kidney removed.
"He doesn't let it show. A lot of people said I had no clue," said Rath.
After five years of treatment, Helm is number three on the list for a kidney transplant.
"I started meeting the goals set for transplant and I started to move up the list," said Helm.
Rath has known Helm for years before they worked together and said she wanted to help her friend out, but knew he was one to not ask for help.
"But when he came to us we knew okay we've gotta get into action," said Rath.
She created a YouCaring donation page online to raise money for his medical expenses.
"I absolutely love this community. I never thought it would take off like it has and I am so grateful for her setting that up for me," said Helm.
Now, he says his bag packed and all he is doing now is waiting for that one important call.
"We're ready to go, so when they say go, we'll be ready," said Helm.
So far, they have raised about seven thousand dollars for Mr. Helm's expenses. To help donate, you can visit Helm's YouCaring page in the Related Links section.
