WACO, Tex. (KBTX) - For our first Cruisin' of the summer, we took a trip up to Waco to check out the Waco Mammoth National Monument.
This place is popular for kids, but there's something here for all of us to discover.
"We have found about 24 mammoths out here in the dirt and the last six mammoths were left in the dirt and we put a climate controlled building on top of that," said Raegan King with the Waco Mammoth National Monument.
You'll learn about Ice Age animals that lived in Texas on a short tour through the woods.
Inside the dig shelter, you'll see fossils of animals that roamed the area about 67 thousand years ago.
"What makes our site so unique is that we found an entire herd--a herd of Columbian mammoths in this case are females and their babies and this is the only time that has ever been found," explained King.
The site makes for a great summer learning opportunity and is something the family can enjoy together.
When your stomachs start grumbling, it's time to head over to Twisted Root Burger Company.
"Well this building used to be a playhouse. It used to be the stage right over there," said Enrique Gonzalez, general manager of Twisted Root in Waco.
Now the burgers and hand crafted shakes are the stars of the show.
"I got the Freshman 15. It has cheddar and bacon and a fried egg," said customer Kirstal Wade.
"I would suggest the Big Tex, that's one of our popular burgers," said Gonzalez.
You can't go wrong with one of their beef burgers loaded with toppings, but if you want to take a walk on the wild side, you've got options.
"Whatever is in season, we change it up every week. Like right now we have wild boar and next week, actually by Thursday, we will have camel." said Gonzalez.
You've got to have good toppings for wild burgers like these, and Twisted Root has their own sauces and pickle bar.
You won't be disappointed by custard shakes either. The most popular shake is the s'mores shake.
So cruise on up Highway 6, where the history and the burgers are one of a kind.
