BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - This time of year is usually full of joy and happiness.
But unfortunately, many are having to go through some tough times this holiday season, including the loss of a loved one or going through a divorce.
Michelle Jeter with Mending Hearts Grief Center joined us on First News at Four to offer some suggestions that can help you navigate through trying times.
According to Jeter, here are some guidelines to follow:
1. Be honest, not only with the people around you, but with yourself. It's hard sometimes to open up and tell the people around you what you can and can't handle, but it releases so much stress and keeps expectations realistic
2. Give yourself permission to say 'No' and permission to say 'Yes'.
Do what is best for you.
3. Know it is okay to not be okay. Many people grieving feel they are wrong if they don't feel joyous at Christmas. But when you've lost a loved one, it's okay to feel what you feel.
4. If you can't seem to find a balance, find a grief support group or reach out to someone who has been through a similar loss.
There is so much comfort in just talking with someone who understands and can help you walk through it.
