Local man goes from serving time to serving wings

HEARNE, Tex. (KBTX) - The owner of a new restaurant in Hearne says he's beating the odds one chicken wing at a time.

"The wings are juicy, unique, tasty and savory,” said Dwayne Jones, Owner of J.U.S.T. Wings on Navasota St. in Hearne.

Jones says it only took him 3 months to come up with and create the restaurant. He says the concept was born from his love for cooking and the picky taste buds of his children.

"They were like, ‘yah daddy that was good.’ I said, ‘I made those and they were like no you didn't.’ So I knew you had something unique," said Jones.

But Jones says it's really his story of adversity that makes J.U.S.T. Wings unique.

“I’m an example,” said Jones.

He says the reason he smiles today is that he's a changed man. Five years ago he was released from prison.

"I did overall 13 years in prison,” said Jones. “That's where I learned culinary. I tried to make the best of the time that I had to do.”

He says as a teen he got into a lot of trouble for a number of different crimes most of them violent crimes. But after serving time he made a decision to turn his life around.

"I want to show the kids that regardless of the obstacles in your life, you can still overcome and do something positive,” said Jones. "They say that your past determines your future and I don't believe that. This is all for nothing if it's not inspirational for somebody else."

J.U.S.T. Wings will open for business on Wednesday.
