Madisonville PD: Man arrested for trying to take officer's gun

MADISONVILLE, Tex. (KBTX) - Madisonville police arrested a man they say tried to take a gun away from a police officer.

Police say Thornton Washington, 30, is being held in the Madison County Jail on $35,000 bond.

On Friday, an officer on patrol observed Washington behaving erratically in the area of South May Street. He eventually ran into a nearby convenience store, and an officer followed him.

Washington made several attempts to come at the officer, and started to reach for the officer's gun, said police. Washington and the officer started to wrestle for control of the gun, until back up arrived and took the suspect into custody.

Washington is charged with public intoxication, assault on a public servant, resisting arrest and attempting to take weapon from peace officer
