College Station police say man lied about accidental shooting of friend

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)- College Station police have arrested a man accused of lying about a shooting last year that injured his friend.

On the evening of October 21, 2016, police and medics rushed to the Eastmark Apartments on Central Park Lane for a shooting call.

The victim, Rashaad Butler, and his friend, Jesus Angel Estrada, said they were out for a walk on the complex grounds when a stray bullet struck the back of Butler's head.

The gunshot entered Butler's lower back right portion of his head and then exited through his lower right ear.

Following an investigation, police and detectives determined both men allegedly lied about what really happened.

According to a probable cause statement, the men were actually inside one of the apartments, and Estrada was holding a loaded gun he had just purchased.

Estrada confessed to police that the gun accidentally went off and struck Butler in the back of the head. Estrada told police he didn't know the gun was loaded.

Estrada used a cell phone to call a third party to come and take the gun away from the scene before police arrived, according to the report. He's now facing a charge of tampering with evidence.

The report did not say if the gun was retrieved, or if anyone else would be facing charges related to the incident.
