Matthew A. Henson (1866-1955)

An orphan at 11, Matthew A. Henson learned to read and write working on a ship as a cabin boy. In 1909 he accompanied Robert E. Peary on the first expedition to the North Pole. Reaching the site first, he greeted Peary first and declared "I think I'm the first man to sit on top of the world!" Celebrate and learn more about Black History.
