COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - Royce Hickman has been a part of the Brazos Valley for most of his life.
If you know him, then you know he is proud to call Bryan/College Station his home.
Before retiring, Royce Hickman was the President of the B/CS Chamber of Commerce for 19 years.
He grew up in this area, and has done his part to help it grow ever since.
"I was born here. This was always home to me," Hickman said. "Mary's dad was in the military, we married when I was in school at A&M...and I would have stayed had there been jobs here."
Royce is one of those guys you just can't help talk to when you see them around town.
"It does frustrate Mary when she sends me to the store and I run into four or five people I know there," Hickman laughed. "You know, I love people...so we are going to visit for a few minutes. So my five minute run to the store sometimes takes 30 to 45 minutes."
But after nearly two decades at the chamber, Royce decided he wanted to shift his focus.
"Mainly there are things that Mary wants done around the house that I haven't been real good about doing. One of my primary purposes in retiring is to spend more time with her and my family, " Hickman said.
Royce says it's still important for him, and for everyone to do whatever you can help fellow members of the community...even if you think what you're doing won't make much of a difference.
"You know it's just like your home, your physical home, that you take pride in," Hickman said. "It's what you care about. You do things to make it special and warm for other people, and that's the way I feel about the community...it's my home."
