BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - A new course taught by Blinn College is getting ready to move to RELLIS.
The college has started a course in Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning, or HVAC. Technicians are in high demand across the state. The career can be pretty lucrative. Technicians can make $22 an hour at some companies.
Starting next week, a new in-depth HVAC class put on by Blinn College is coming to the RELLIS Campus. With a grant from Texas Workforce Solutions, some students could enroll for half price. It's all part of Blinn's effort to bring workforce training to RELLIS.
"It's a good field to get into, especially here in Texas. It's always hot or cold, so I always have something to do," said Tre Nowicki, a Blinn College Student.
"Could be anything that conditions the air for cooling, for comfort cooling or process cooling for that kind of thing," Ronald Keppel said. He's the course instructor. Right now 17 students are in the class. The upcoming classes at RELLIS meet twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5:30 o 9:00 p.m. Many in the class have hopes of landing a job after it's over.
Cody Menn is new to the class and hopes to take over his father's business some day.
"Yes I've been working with him since I was about 12 probably off and on," he said.
"But in the past year, I've been working with him full time. He wanted me to get some school education so I can have a certificate," said Menn.
"This is an introductory class. It's for beginners. They really are not expected to know anything here. My objective is to, once they leave here, really have a solid grasp on at least the basics. That way they can go out and potentially get a really great job right out of the bat," said Kleppel.
The new class at RELLIS will be more in-depth, and lasts 20 weeks. The first day of class will be on Valentine's Day. For more information you can call (979) 209-7205.
Class size is limited to the first 18 enrollees.
