HUNTSVILLE, Texas (KBTX) -- The Sam Houston State football team was on the field today at Bowers Stadium for a scrimmage.
The Bearkats have to replace two-time Walter Payton Award winner Jeremiah Briscoe at quarterback.
Former College Station Cougar Ty Brock, junior college transfer Mike Dare, who was also at Rutgers, and former Woodlands Highlander Eric Schmid are all battling for the job.
Junior wide receiver Nathan Stewart has played his entire college career with Briscoe but now it is time to play with a new quarterback.
Stewart said today after the scrimmage, "Actually I'm blessed to play with somebody as such a high level. He got me equipped to the game. He got me up to speed real quick and that's something that I wanted to do coming in as a freshman. If I wanted to play here early Briscoe was the perfect gut to get me aligned. He got me right, he got me in tip top shape so now Mike comes in from Rutgers and Ty Brock come in it's all easy and I'm always equipped to it. I can help the young guys get up now. It feels good for me doing that being in the game."
The Kats kickoff the season two weeks from today at home against Prairie View A&M.
