CENTERVILLE, Texas -- Classroom Champions, sponsored by American Momentum Bank.
News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest Classroom Champion, Harley Matthews. The Centerville High School Senior has a 3.9 GPA, and is currently ranked third in her class.
Lisa Noey – Teacher
“I think Harley does a great job of handling the pressure of being a student athlete. Harley works hard both on the field and also she's involved in several other activities; and she also works after school. So, she knows that she needs to manage her time well to be able to handle all of the responsibilities that she's put upon herself.”
Harley is a three year letter-winner, and the starting First baseman for the Lady Tigers. She has been a two-time, 1st Team All-Academic selection in softball at Centerville. Outside of athletics, Harley is a involved in the National Honor Society, FCS (Fellowship of Christian Students), UIL and the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America). And in her spare time, Harley likes spending time with her family and friends, and she also volunteers in her community.
Luther Kirkpatrick - Coach
“I think she leads by example and she's vocal. And always encouraging, always being the one to pick up the field after a game, or after practice. And so she's leading by example and being vocal. You know all our girls work hard; it seems like she goes above and beyond in the classroom. And she knows what she wants to do for her life.”
Harley Matthews - Student
“When I was younger I didn't have much. And you know coming her and realizing that I'm actually good at something. Makes me want to be the above average student. I think that what really strives me. Just like looking at my past, that's something that motivates me to be better than the average student.”
After High School, Harley will attend Sam Houston State University and hopes to one day become a Child Psychologist.
Congratulations to Harley Matthews of Centerville High School. This week’s News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
