NORMANGEE, Texas -- Classroom Champions, sponsored by American Momentum Bank.
News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest Classroom Champion, Samuel Merkel. The Normangee High School Senior has a 4.0 GPA, and is currently ranked number two in his class.
Cody Gore – Teacher
“I think Sam being involved in all the other stuff...State FFA team, Regional UIL. It makes him wear the pressure like in a game situation doesn't bother him that much. Because he's been in competition type situations at the regional level, the state level. And so it allows him t be calm in situations when things may go bad. He can still do what he's supposed to do and not worry about the outside influences.”
Samuel plays football, golf, and basketball for the Normangee Panthers. In football, he was named 2nd Team All-District and 1st Team All-Academic. And in basketball, Samuel has been a 1st Team All-Academic selection for the past three seasons. Outside of sports, Samuel is a member of the National Honor Society, FFA (Future Farmers of America), and he's a Mirabeau B. Lamar Award of Excellence recipient. In his spare time, Samuel enjoys fishing and showing his steers.
Clayton Todd - Coach
“I think he's going to be a transformational style leadership. I think he;'s going to be able to inspire others. And I think he really enjoys developing a relationship with the people around him. And really doesn't get them to fear what he's doing. He gets them excited about what he's doing around him. So I think a transformational style leadership is what he's about.”
Samuel Merkel - Student
“I was always taught to do my best, and not to be average. And I work as hard as I can...And I guess that what fuels me to work as hard as I do. I was taught hard work gets you things; gets things done. And just my family works hard and they taught me to work hard.”
After High School, Samuel will attend Texas Tech University and will major in Chemical Engineering.
Congratulations to Samuel Merkel of Normange High School. This week’s News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
