BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -- Hearne will sport its third head coach in as many seasons, but the Eagle program is trending upwards. Former Hempstead head coach Ricky Sargent will take over the controls from Andrew Dailey, who will stay on staff and also become Hearne’s head basketball coach.
Sargent spent 11 seasons in command of the Bobcats, guiding them to the playoffs seven times, including a trip the 2011 Class 2A Division I state championship game.
Sargent and his staff will have plenty of talent to work with. Offensively, the Eagles will return nine starters. That group includes all-district first teamers in junior wide out Ja’Varrian Bailey and senior tailback Cedrion Golden. The unit will once again be led by senior signal caller Josiah Green, who was an all-district honorable mention selection in 2016. On defense, the Eagles return seven.
Led by senior safety Gerald Ross and junior linebacker Patrick Foley, both all-district first teamers, the Eagles have the potential to terrorize opposing offenses.
That defense will be put to the test early as the Eagles open the season by playing host to 2016 state semifinalist, Centerville, with matchups against Rogers, New Waverly and Leon also on tap. Sargent said, “The experience we gained last year will be our biggest strength.” Expect that experience to be put to good use as the Eagles will likely be playoff bound once again.
