The Sam Houston State Bearkats will reach the midway point of the Southland Conference season this weekend and have the opportunity for a statement win on Saturday when they travel to Nacogdoches to take on preseason league favorite Stephen F. Austin at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The game can be watched online at ESPN3 or on the WatchESPN app with SFA’s Rob Meyers on the call. Bearkat fans will also get the chance to listen live with Jason Barfield and Jordan Smith calling the game over the air on KSHU 90.5 FM. Through eight league games the Bearkats find themselves just one game back of first-place Nicholls after a comeback victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday in Huntsville. Christopher Galbreath Jr. and John Dewey III each turned in big games against the Lions, who entered the game tied with the Colonels for tops in the Southland.
Galbreath pumped in 25 points and pulled down 10 boards for his league-leading ninth double-double of the year while Dewey poured in 18 points for the second straight game, including 14 in a near perfect second half for Sam Houston that saw them score 48 points and commit just one turnover.
They will need that sound play against an SFA team that suffered the sting of its second league loss of the year Wednesday night at hot-shooting Central Arkansas. Still, the Lumberjacks will enter Saturday leading the country with an NCAA-best 21.6 turnovers forced per game while the Kats commit a league-low 12.7 per game.
Sam Houston will also be looking for its first win in Nacogdoches since 2011, a place that only one Southland Conference team has claimed victory since 2012.
The Kats are allowing just 66.2 points per game but will be challenged by SFA’s 81.5 points per game average that is fueled by three players averaging double figures. Sophomore Kevon Harris’ 16.9 points per game leads the way while TJ Holyfield (14.7 ppg) and Shannon Bogues (14.2 ppg) also average in double figures.
SERIES vs STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
Sam Houston snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Lumberjacks last season, winning the first game of the season series in Huntsville. It was the first win for SHSU over SFA since consecutive wins in the 2010-11 season. Still, SFA owns an 11-game advantage in the all-time series that saw its 200th playing a year ago.
