COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – "I'm not going to lie, I like to win"
The sweltering summer heat is no match for Mary Timony.
"I just love the sport. I have a huge passion for this stuff."
The College Station resident is a proud wife and mother of two and getting ready to represent her community and country this September at the Sprint Triathlon World Championships in Rotterdam
"I get that chance to give back to the United States, and it means the world to me to be on Team USA and to represent our flag and our nation"
But it was chance that almost didn't happen.
A top triathlete for years, Timony competed at the 2016 US Championships in Omaha. And while she was close, she didn't qualify for the world championships
"When I left Omaha I vowed I was coming back and was going to qualify this year."
But a few months later everything changed.
"I just got an email in early March from Team USA inviting me to be on the team. It took me about two or three days to process the whole thing. And now, I am just purely grateful for this happening in my life."
Grateful for the early, muggy mornings she spends training and grateful for her family, who has supported her along the way.
"I'm not home on the weekends; I'm always doing a race somewhere. We have a pizza a lot of times at our house because I don't have time to cook because I'm just getting done with a bike ride"
It's the opportunity of a lifetime. One she'll make the most of.
"I have no idea what I'm up against at all and I kinda don't really care, I just want to go and be part of the United States team and represent our flag and our country."
