Two-time defending state champion West Orange-Stark held off Madisonville 28-26 to advance in the 4A Division II Region III playoffs.

Madisonville scored on a 47-yard Ben Phillips to Kendall Moffett touchdown pass with 4:35 to play to pull within 28-26, but Cornelius Merchant was stopped on a two-point attempt.

The Mustangs had one last chance when they forced a punt and got the ball at their own five with 46 seconds to play, but Phillips was picked off by Blake Robinson and WO-S held on to win.

Madisonville sees its season end with a record of 11-2, while West Orange-Stark will advance to play either Bellville or Salado in the regional championship.

Madisonville scored first in the game on a Phillips to Kasey Williamson touchdown pass in the first quarter.

Two first-half Mustang turnovers led to both West Orange-Stark touchdowns: an interception turned into a Kayven Cooper 16-yard run and a fumble into a two-yard Chaka Watson score to give WO-S a 14-7 lead.

Mauricio Aceves kicked a 42-yard field goal to send the game to the half with a 14-10 score.

West Orange-Stark took 11-point leads twice in the second half but Madisonville answered both times to keep it close.
