FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s Drake Murphy and Sam Houston State’s Ashton Summers are the Southland Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
This marks Murphy’s second weekly track honor of the season while Sam Houston State has now earned two straight men’s field awards.
The Lumberjacks and Bearkats both head to Houston next for the Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday while Sam Houston will also send competitors to the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque this weekend. These will all be the final tune-ups for both teams before the 2018 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., from Feb. 21-22.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Drake Murphy, Stephen F. Austin – Jr. – Galveston, Texas
Murphy was the top collegiate performer in the men’s 600m race at the New Mexico Classic, finishing with a time of 1:20.06 to finish second overall in the race. He also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay, which took second at the event with a time of 3:13.17 - just behind the Southland Conference best in the event (3:12.30), set by Murphy and the relay group earlier this season.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Ashton Summers, Sam Houston State – Jr. – Katy, Texas
Summers won the pole vault at the Texas Tech Open with a height of 17-4.25, a mark that tops the Southland this season.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
