BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -- The Rudder Ranger Gymnastics team has repeated as state champions holding off Kingwood High School 342.00 to 341.400 after Saturday's Optionals Round at the THSGCA State Meet in Odessa.
Rudder lead Saginaw by .25 points and Kingwood by 1 point following the Compulsory Round on Friday and they needed nearly all of that lead on Saturday as Kingwood won the day with 166.250 points, but Rudder's 2nd place finish with 165.850 gave them just enough cushion to repeat and claim Bryan ISD's 10th boys' gymnastics title.
Rudder was lead by senior Tim Fletcher who also made history on Saturday by winning gold medals on the Still Rings, High Bar, Vault and the All Around.
Fletcher's High Bar gold medal was the 4th straight of his high school career. While on the Still Rings Tim posted back to back 10's. The first time a combined score of 20 had been attained in that event ever.
Combined with the team gold medal Tim has claimed 16 gold medals during his high school career capturing the most gold medals of any male gymnast in the 51 year history of the THSGCA.
Rudder Head Coach J.T. Fletcher said, "It was a nail biter today! The boys really answered the bell when things got tight!"
"I was really proud of Kingwood coming in second place because it shows how strong our region is."
