BRYAN – The Brazos County Expo Complex will house Special Olympics Texas’ (SOTX) annual Chapter Equestrian Competition from Friday, May 19 – Sunday, May 21. Approximately 160 athletes from across the state are expected to ride in the event. The event is free and open to the public and volunteers are still needed. A complete schedule of competition is below.
The field will feature athletes ranging from 12-70 years old. All riders will have trained for a minimum of 12 weeks leading up to the event and have participated at the area level to qualify for this statewide competition.
The Bryan/College Station and surrounding Heart of East Texas area will be well-represented in this competition, as five delegations will have athletes riding, including: Beyond the Arena, Joy Ride Center, Panther Creek Inspirational Ranch, S.H.A.R.E. and SIRE Hockley.
All athletes will go for the gold in various events, including Working Trails, Western Equitation, English Equitation and many more. Drill Team and Team Relay events will include Unified Partners – individuals without intellectual disabilities – competing with SOTX athletes.
Matthew Brogan (Magnolia, Texas) is one of four athletes chosen from around the state to carry the torch bearing the Flame of Hope during Saturday morning’s Opening Ceremony. Brogan, 22, is a member of the Joy Ride Center and will be riding in Western Equitation and Working Trails at the Chapter Equestrian Competition.
This standalone state competition is one of six annual state championship events held by SOTX and one of only two single-sport statewide events.
Those able to volunteer can register online, or by contacting Judy Yoshimaru at firstname.lastname@example.org or call at (512)-491-2947 with your availability.
