TAMPERE, Finland – A trio of Aggies will be part of the United States team competing in the World U20 Championships, which will be held in Tampere Stadium from July 10-15. The event will include more than 1,400 athletes from nearly 150 teams.
Coverage of the meet will be available on the Olympic channel as well as NBC Sports Network online. IAAF Radio will broadcast live during each session. Live results are also available through the iaaf.org website and through the IAAF app.
Texas A&M will be represented by Sammy Watson, the defending World junior 800m champion from 2016, along with Gabe Oladipo in the discus and Julia Madubuike in the 4x400 relay pool.
Watson won the NCAA 800m title and U.S. Junior title on consecutive weekends in June during her freshman campaign with the Aggies. In 2016 she claimed the World junior title in 2:04.52, becoming just the second American to win the 800m title over the 30-year history of the biennial meet.
Only one athlete has claimed a pair of World junior titles in the 800m, Mirela Lavric of Romania in 2008 and 2010. Lavric’s winning time of 2:00.06 for the 2008 victory is the meet record.
This season Watson has produced five of the top 20 world performances by U20 athletes. Her leading time of 2:01.46 claimed the U.S. junior title. Watson’s personal best of 2:00.65 was set in 2017 on July 18 in Bellizona, Switzerland.
Oladipo enters the World U20 Championships as the U.S. Junior champion with a career best of 200-7 (61.15) with the 1.75 kg discus. That effort ranks Oladipo 12th on the 2018 World junior list. The current world leader is Qatar’s Mohamed Ibrahim Moaaz, the defending World U20 champion.
Madubuike produced a career best of 52.42 in placing fourth in the 400m at the U.S. Junior meet to qualify for the United States 4x400 relay pool. American teams have won eight consecutive World junior titles in the women’s 4x400.
Watson ran on the 2016 winning 4x400, anchoring the squad to a 3:29.11 victory with a 52.47 split.
