Gem of the Day 3/2: Big Event A Finalist In White House’s Campus Champions For Change Challenge

Texas A&M University’s Big Event, the nation’s largest annual student-led community service project, has been named a finalist in the White House’s Campus Champions for Change Challenge. Online voting ends tomorrow (Saturday, March 3), so Aggies and others still have time to help have Big Event be one of the five projects to be formally recognized in White House ceremonies.

Being the largest student-run one-day service project in the nation, Texas A&M officials say Big Event is a good fit for the White House program that was created to inspire college students to get out into their communities and make a difference.

“All Across America, college and university students are helping our country out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the rest of the world,” said President Obama in the White House announcement of the finalists. “I hope this challenge shines a light on their efforts, and inspires Americans of all ages to get involved in their communities.”

For the past 30 years, thousands of Aggies have spread out through the Bryan/College Station community to do thousands of service jobs as part of Big Event. Last year approximately 15,000 Texas A&M students participated in Big Event, including members of the Aggie football team, and even more are expected to join in for this year’s event on March 24.

Aggies, residents of the Bryan/College Station community and others everywhere can help to Big Event and its participants be honored by casting their votes, which they can do by going to http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/03/01/campus-champions-change-challenge. The top five vote getters among the 15 finalists will be invited to an event at the White House. They will also be featured by mtvU and MTV Act and be given the opportunity to host an episode of mtvU’s signature program “The Dean’s List.”
