The U.S. Coast Guard has recognized a Willis man for saving the lives of a mother and her two sons.
Taylor Wood received the Coast Guard Commendation Award for Heroic Achievement for saving the family that was struggling while swimming in Corpus Christi last year.
Being a reserve fireman apprentice with the Coast Guard, the 23-year-old said his role is to be an emergency responder, even though rescue swimming isn't in his job description.
Wood did swim competitively at Willis High School and was a lifeguard at the Conroe Aquatic Center, which gave him some experience in the water.
