Bryan Native, Aggie Recalls Reporting JFK, Oswald Deaths

A Bryan native and Texas A&M graduate had a first-hand look at tragic history fifty years ago.

Bob Huffaker was reporting for KRLD in Dallas on November 22, 1963 as President John F. Kennedy's motorcade rolled through on its fateful trek towards Dealey Plaza.

As a result of the president's shooting, Huffaker went to Parkland Hospital, where he would report on Kennedy's death.

Two days later, his voice would forever be attached to the murder of Kennedy assassination suspect Lee Harvey Oswald. As he reported from the basement of the Dallas Police Department, Oswald's transfer took a deadly turn when Jack Ruby fired a gun into the suspect's stomach. Huffaker broadcast the shooting to the nation.

His experiences and the nation's became the subject of a book he co-authored, "When the News Went Live: Dallas 1963."

Just months before the shootings, Huffaker had wrapped up two-and-a-half years working at KBTX.

In his mid-20s at the time of the drama, Huffaker only stayed in broadcasting another four years. He went on to be an English professor, and later an editor for Texas Monthly.
